The most popular or common form of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) function is CNC Milling. You can perform drilling and often turning functions on a CNC mill. The CNC Mills are classified by the number of axes they have.Axes are labeled z for vertical movement and as x and y for horizontal movement. A standard light-duty manual mill is typically assumed to have four axes:
- Table x
- Table y
- Table z
- Milling Head z
A five axis milling machine has an extra axis, which is a horizontal pivot for the milling head, that allows extra flexibility for machining with the mill end at varying angles with respect to the table position.
A machine that has 6 axes would have yet another horizontal pivot for the mill head, which would be in a position that is perpendicular to the fifth axis.
G-Codes are the standard programming language codes for CNC milling machines. These G-Codes begin with the letter G and each number suffix has a specific meaning for machine movement.
