If you are interested in the world of numerical control and CNC machines, you surely must have heard about the word G-code. For those of you who are not familiar with this term let me assure you that this is not rocket science of some thing of a classified nature. Basically G-code is used to refer to various types of code which is used to program and control the motion of CNC machines. Originally it referred to the code developed by the Electronics Industry Alliance as early as 1960. But of late although the name is still in popular use, currently it does not refer to a particular or specific language but there are different variation of the this code with each specific to some vendor or manufacturer. This is so because there is very little interoperability due to the vast nature of machine tool configurations which are available currently. An attempt was made to standardise this code when in the year 1980 a language was named by the name of RS274D which was a sort of final revision of the G-code. It also refers to various commands which are given as a part of the programming language meant to control the movements of the machine tool which are controlled by motors who get their signals from computers. To give a few examples of such G-codes just look at the following. G00 -- Rapid Positioning G01 -- Linear Interpolation Tags: g code • rs274d • rapid positioning • linear interpolation • 1 Comments. - Permalink |

No longer is the manufacture and supply of hi-tech high-end machines such as the CNC lathe a prerogative of the west only, but these days they are being manufactured in the Asian continent as well. In this blog we will discuss briefly about one such company which is based in the country of India and manufactures high quality CNC machines. The name of the company is Manpower CNC Machines Pvt Ltd. and was started in the year 1985. Over the years this company has gone a long way in establishing itself and a popular brand both within and without India. Of course during the early days of its inception the company did not start manufacturing CNC machines straight away but only started to manufacture CNC machines about four years ago in the year 2003 and has been awarded the ISO 9001 in design. One of the CNC machines manufactured by this company is the Speed LX 1000 which is a very elaborate and versatile machine and can be used to carry out different jobs of variable natures. It has several advanced features such as the RS 232 serial interface port, graphic simulation, electronic hand wheel and LCD display to name a few. There are several companies in the world which manufacture CNC machines and in this blog we will learn something about one such company. The name of the company is HAAS machines. It has a wide range of vertical as well as horizontal CNC machining centres under its belt and caters to the needs of a wide target of consumers who have such requirements. It was established by Gene Francis Haas in 1983 and it went a long way to become one of the largest CNC machines manufacturers in the world. The company has got a world wide network of distributors that work round the clock to provide sales and after sales services for the customers. When in the year 1988 the company declared that it would produce vertical machining centre for under US dollars fifty thousand, most of the people at that time were sceptical about it. Of course nowadays it is very common to see such machines since computers and software have drastically reduced in costs since that time. The company has a huge manufacturing facility at Oxnard in California which uses state of the art technology to manufacture high quality reasonably priced CNC machines to supply them worldwide. In this blog we will learn something about a CNC lathe. As most of you will be knowing a lathe is machine tool which can be used for a variety of manufacturing processes and can work on a large spectrum of materials as well. Earlier the traditional lathe machines were not automated but depended on a manual operator to carry out the various operations but as with any other technology even the lathe machines are no longer dumb machines which have to depend on the human operator for every action. Nowadays these machines are being integrated with computers and now they are becoming increasingly intelligent machines which can perform various tasks by being programmed with the appropriate software. This has led to substantial increase in production rates and the replacement of human operators by machines which can perform routine monotonous operations without any errors or other problems associated with human beings. With the advent of free operating systems such as Linux and open source CNC software, the cost of CNC machines including CNC lathes have substantially reduced over the years which has made it possible for most industries to use these machines for increasing their production and efficiency in the long run. The list of CNC software used to control the machine tools in CNC machines is quite elaborate and it is not feasible to discuss all the available software in this blog series, yet attempts would be made in between to cover as much information as possible. In this blog you are going to learn about another software similar to FlashCut, and the name of this software is Mach. It is quite similar to FlashCut in that it can be used to convert and ordinary PC into a CNC controller with the installation of this software. Yet it has some unique features as well which make it bit different from FlashCut although I would not go to the extent of saying this which one is better. Infact both these softwares have their own unique features and depends on lot of factors such as requirements of manufacture, availability of the software and so forth when about to be used in an actual situation. Mach offers a 6 axis CNC control as compared to the 4 axis control of FlashCut. The software comes bundled with a lot of extra patches such as wizards for various purposes such as gear cutting, text engraving and so forth.
