Why are we even using ball screws any more with the linear motor technology available?

06/22/09 12:35

Do we just like the expense and downtime necessary when you hear the awful sound of a good ball screw gone bad within your CNC machine?

After reading this article, it leads me to believe that there is some purpose or gain in remaining in the dark ages with motors while the rest of the technology involved is light years ahead.

What do you have to gain by switching to a linear motor? Well some benefits are:

  • High acceleration and deceleration rates
  • Easy installation
  • Fewer components to wear out
  • Flexibility of design
  • No mechanical wear
  • Backlash free positioning

What will be the effect of frequent power fluctuations and power black out if the axis are moving in say 100 meters rapid.
